Description : The George is a friendly, traditional pub centrally located on Great Portland St. The George was established in 1677 however the existing building is Georgian. It is Grade II listed and stands out with its ornate Georgian mirrors with which all walls are covered and its grand back bar mirror display.

The George is known in the area and particularly by older BBC people as "The Gluepot". It was christened this by Sir Henry Wood, the Conductor, who used to rehearse the BBC orchestras and give concerts in The Queen's Hall which was to the rear of the building. During breaks in rehearsals and concerts his musicians, being thirsty people made their way to this house to slake their thirsts. Many times serevral of them drank too deeply rather than wisely, and were late in returning to their musical duties, where they were severely reprimanded by the Maestro and accused of staying too long "in that bloody gluepot".

The pub has maintained strong links with the BBC through the years, with for example the late Ned Sherrin holding court every Saturday and to this day is the proud watering hole of many BBC colleagues within Broadcasting House. It is also just around the corner from the bustling media centre of Great Titchfield St.

Groups of up to 50 people can be accomodated in one half of the pub and we have a cosy snug area suitable for groups of 20 or under. The booking of tables is also welcomed. Any type of buffet can be arranged.

The George has a wide range of wines and spirits particularly whisky, with 10 fine malts always available. The George is also well known in the area for our extensive range of Cask Marque accredited Cask Ales. As well as the always popular Greene King IPA and Royal London there are 3 guest ales at all times, with around 20 guest ales a month from the UK's small independent breweries.

We also serve food daily from 12pm until 9pm, which has all your traditional pub favourites, such as fish and chips, beef and ale pie, lamb shank, casseroles and sausages and mash as well as ligher dishes and sandwiches. We also serve on Sundays a full traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings.
